58 Edgbaston Park Road, University of Birmingham, Birmingham B15 2RT, England

Winterbourne Botanic Garden is in the grounds of and owned by the University of Birmingham, located in Edgbaston, Birmingham and open all year round.

Winterbourne  House is set within this beautiful seven acre site with picturesque gardens inspired by the Arts and Crafts movement of the Edwardian time.  The house reminds me of an old school but it was originally built as a family home for the Nettlefold family in 1904. The architect was Joseph Lancaster Ball.

Today the walls are brightly decorated with William Morris Wallpaper and the home has been brought back to its glorious self. There's also a beautiful large lake known as Edgbaston Pool. This site has been designated of special scientific interest because of its late Triassic marsh lands and glacial sands. Its amazingly tranquil considering its so close to Birmingham.

There's some amazing bird life to be found here too if your a twitcher prepare to be thrilled by the hooded crow and the Nightingale to name a few. Where else but in the Woodland Walk can you stand in admiration at the glory of the giant rhubarb and skunk cabbage, The gardens are also evolving too with a total of a thousand plants being planted by volunteers over the last few months alone. The magical gardens are a must see and part of the Royal Horticultural Society.

Fingers crossed that the weathers good as it makes a big difference to the experience here.

The garden contains many plants from across the world. They have featured on the BBC TV's Gardener's World series, Even better there's a plant shop so you can get yourself a living memento of your trip. Students at the University get free entry to the site and always plenty of interactive family friendly exhibits for outside visitors too.

You will also find a really cool gift shop and a cute terraced tea room where the dinning room used to be, if you fancy a snack and a cuppa this is the place. Prices are a little bit high but the quality and service very good. Winterbourne also offers a unique series of courses from year long certificates in horticulture to six week bee keeping courses if you are interested in embarking on a new career check them out.

They also offer a varied variety of other activities like yoga retreats , heritage open days and stained glass painting.

Its easy to get to from Birmingham  either jump on a train from New Street to the University station with a ten minute walk across the campus (which is worth a look in itself) or ten minutes in the car.

There are about fifty car parking spaces on site and facilities for blue badge holders. On busy days when the car park is full, you can use the multi storey car park on Pritchatts Road. It's also easy to get too and flat on a bike, just follow the towpath from the city, theres even a couple of bike racks on site to lock it to.
